The term branding has become replaced with relationship - the focus is now on two way communication rather than assymetric, one direction communication!

Great summary. I'd add mobile (beyond mobile ads) as a key trend to figure out. It's probably like social last year: something everyone should be thinking hard about and many people are doing but something everyone will be doing by next year.

Telemarketing in Australia can still be done but it should be done more carefully now. Businesses need to check the registry for matches within the DNC so that they won't make a fatal mistake.

Well, you're right that they got people talking about their products, but we've always talked about their products. Almost always in a positive way, because we love our Vegemite and peanut butter. It's something we've loved from when we were little people. (Well, at least if you grew up in Australia). I don't really buy the all publicity is good publicity and it if WAS a ploy (which I doubt) I don't think that spike in attention would have helped them either sell one more jar of product, or have a longterm positive impact on their brand perception. Pretty sure most people think a little less of them after that debacle.

Hi David,
This is an old topic, but do you think from a strategic point of view that the publicity Kraft recieved was all negative from the i-snack 'debacle'.It almost seems like clever marketing, getting an entire nation talking about their products again.

That's really interesting, I've never noticed that before because i don't use Bing very often. It shows that Google displays the meta description much more accurately than Bing.

It is something that we are discussing with some new clients, but the best social media campaigns don't appear to try and control the message.

Sure there is moderators who try and direct or guide the conversations/threads but controlling social media is going to take more resources that running the campaign.

Hi David! I just recently stumbled across your blog, but have enjoyed reading it! This is a great, succinct, and to-the-point post.

I've written a few posts on this topic, and think this is a great way to sum it up.

As David Meerman Scott says, "Say 'No' to Gobbledegook!"

Thanks for the posts!

Take care,

. Small Business owners are largely forgotten. Thats why I only focus on them. I have experience several members of my family file bankruptcy due to small business failures. I also I suffered through 2 destroyed businesses due to failure however, in my failings I have learned some of the secrets to success. (Who can say they know it all?)
What I like about small business owners is that they are not afraid to take huge risks and lay it all on the line. But, I agree they do need a lot of help with their marketing. I think having them go the social media and email route is not only the least expensive but its also the most effective. Thanks for the stats!
